Group Director: Dr. Hamid Gourabi

Dr. Hamid Gourabi obtained his doctoral degree in medical physics from Tarbiat Modares University in 1977. He is interested in conducting research in the fields of reproductive genetics, radiobiology, and stem cells.
An academic faculty member in the Academic Center for Education, Culture, and Research since 1994, teaching and being a member of the faculty of Iran University of Medical Sciences in the years 1985 to 2002, and member of the academic board of Royan Institute since 2002, management of the infertility genetics research group of Royan Institute, and the directorship of Royan Institute from February 2006 to November 2017 are parts of his scientific and executive records.

History
The infertility genetics group was established at Royan Institute in 2001. The infertility treatment department of Royan Institute offers specialized paraclinical services to its clients through this group, some of the activities provided include:
Genetic counseling
Lymphocyte karyotype
Prenatal tests including amniocentesis, MLPA, and QF-PCR
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis of embryos (PGD) with FISH, Array CGH, Sanger sequencing techniques

Also, molecular genetic tests in the clinical department of this group provide services to clients, which include the diagnosis of microdeletions of the Y chromosome and specific mutations in certain genes that may be related to repeated abortions or non-implantation of fetuses or known genetic diseases.
The group focuses on investigating the genetic causes of male and female infertility, recurrent miscarriage (RSA), genetic causes leading to azoospermia, pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, pharmacogenetics, and epigenetics.
Among the other research topics of the infertility Genetics Group, we can mention the investigation of gene expression profiles in early embryonic stages and the effect of freezing techniques on the gene profile of oocyte or embryo cells or ovarian tissue (in cancer patients who send their ovarian tissue to the Royan Research Institute for freezing before chemotherapy) in collaboration with the embryology and female infertility groups.
This group is mainly involved in producing recombinant proteins by genetically manipulating cells in various hosts. They also work with transgenic animals and chickens to produce these proteins, with the help of the embryology and stem cell teams at the Royan Research Institute. The research group of embryo infertility genetics has continuously cooperation with the stem cell research institute in preparing karyotypes of stem cell lines as well as epigenetic studies and genetic studies of stem cells and iPSC stem cells.
Since March 2019, the faculty members of this group have collaborated to establish a molecular diagnosis laboratory for COVID-19 and are still working in this field.

Goals
The mission of the group is to conduct foundational research on the genetic and epigenetic factors impacting fertility, embryo development, and implantation. We aim to improve patient health and promote the birth of healthy babies by utilizing our findings in clinical treatments.

Activities
Investigation of genetic causes related to male and female infertility in the Iranian population
Epigenetic studies of egg, sperm, and embryo after assisted reproductive treatments and also after freezing
Person-based medicine in the treatment of infertility in prescribing the right type and amount of drugs to stimulate controlled ovulation, through pharmacogenetics
Investigating the genetic causes of recurrent miscarriage in the Iranian population
Fertility preservation in cancer patients
Diagnosis with the help of less invasive indicators in diseases related to sterility-infertility and cancer
Improving the rate of implantation and the health of embryos with the help of diagnostic methods and genetic screening before implantation and before birth
Follow-up of the genetic health of babies born with ART
Production of medicinal proteins through transgenic animals

Clinical Laboratories
Genetic diagnosis before embryo implantation
Medical molecular genetics
Medical cytogenetics
